Field Test Engineer
The Field Test Engineer will contribute to a fast-paced and growing team responsible for the conception, development and implementation of Joule’s SolarConverter system. He/she will be involved with system design, but will be focused primarily on performing experiments to evaluate the durability, performance and operation of Joule’s SolarConverter prototypes. The Field Test Engineer will also be responsible for analyzing results from experiments and reporting on these results. In addition, he/she will be involved in the conception, development, implementation and verification of next generation technologies. This person is expected to perform tasks independently while working closely with individual team members to ensure that projects move forward according to timelines. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, excited by technical challenges, and is a risk taker.
Most of the work associated with this position will be performed outdoors at Joule’s pilot facility in Leander, Texas. However, the Field Test Engineer may also need to perform short-term experiments at Joule’s labs in Cambridge, Massachusetts and at future Joule facilities.
Responsibilities
• Empirical evaluation of SolarConverter prototypes and systems
• Design, build and set-up of design verification and validation tests
• Perform outdoor durability and life cycle testing
• Evaluation and analysis of the long-term outdoor behavior of plastics and other materials
• Field installation of Joule’s SolarConverter and related systems
• Maintenance of Joule’s SolarConverter systems
• Support growth and productivity experiments
• Support heat, mass transfer and fluid flow experiments
• Analyze data and report on results using tools such as DFMEA and 8-D problem solving methods
Qualifications
The Field Test Engineer requires prior laboratory experience operating thermal, fluidic and mechanical test systems. Some background in biological systems is desired, but not required. A Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related area is required. Candidates should be hands-on and capable of designing and fabricating experiments and test stands. They should be familiar with a range of sensor and measurement techniques, and should be able to set priorities and work independently under aggressive timelines. Other desirable attributes include:
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• A team player who can also work independently with minimal supervision
• Experience with Excel or Matlab
• Experience with SolidWorks
